J.R.R Tolkien was a professor of languages at Oxford University in England. One evening he started writing a story for his children. It was an adventure story. He called the story The Hobbit. He sent it to a publisher. The publisher, Mr Unwin, paid his ten-year-old son to read the story. Mr Unwin decided to publish the book because his son liked it very much.
Tolkien then wrote another story, The Lord of the Rings. It continued the story of The Hobbit. It took Tolkien ten-and-a-half years to write the second story because he created languages for the different characters. This story came out in three parts; The Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. These books later became popular films.
